COLORED REPUBLICAN CONVENTION IN KENTUCKY.
The colored people of Kentucky held a delegate convention at Frankfort on the 23d ult. The attendance was large, nearly one hundred counties being represented. The speeches made on the occasion were characterized by good sense and great moderation. One said: "
"We wish to make friends, not enemies. In the words of the great loyal chieftain, 'let us so act that we may have peace;' let there be no appeal to prejudice or passion. Let us strive to make our course upward and onward, and win for ourselves honor in the land we may have to live in - I should say in the land we will have to live in." All the speakers disclaimed any desire to establish social equality between the two races. "We want," they said, "only our rights before the law and simple justice." In concluding his remarks, the same speaker quoted above, said: "Let us cultivate friendly feelings, and if any man is our enemy let the cause of that enmity be in his own breast. We must give no offence to any man, and if any one desires to be our enemy, it will be because he wants to be! Be respectful and manly and do right. In so doing you will force your opponents to respect you." This is good advice, and promises well for the future of the colored man of Kentucky. Another speaker said "he blamed no party or men for the past; Providence, which oversees all, had brought about what we enjoy to-day." Another said: "We will forget the laws made i against the black man's advancement in the past, but will strive to do our whole duty in the future." The Louisville Commercial says: "The feeling among the colored people throughout the State is unanimous. They will stand by the Republican party to the last man, remembering the great work performed for them by the Republican party, and the long course of oppression pursued by the Democratic party of the State."
