A NEGRO CONVENTION. ---------
A Social Separation, not Social Equality, on Passenger Cars. GALVESTON.
Galveston, July 13. - A News special [unclear][/unclear] Austin says the colored men's State convention before final adjournment adopted an addrss to the people, It congratulates the State upon the friendly relations of the races in Texas. It assumes that the few cases of wrong and oppression upon colored persons are exceptional, and [unclear][/unclear] that the great body of whites are friendly. It condems lynch law. It asserts that as railway passengers the negroes are badly treated, and says they do not want in this matter to ask for social equality, but they want social separation, with equal accomodations, on trains for the same pay. It advises their people to discharge ignorant and immoral teachers and preachers whose standing and axemple inculcate crime. It discourages immigration from the State and even from county to county, unless for the best of reasons. It recomends the purchse of lands and homes, the production of home comforts and the necessaries of life before producing articles for sale, and that the young men should be encouraged to learn trades. It counsels local organizations to encourage all these aims, advises against petty litigation and recommends teachers and leaders to encourage a friendly relation with the white. The closing paragraph is: "Let the Republicans know that the colored voters remain solid in that organization."
