The significance of an industrial convention of the colored people of Virginia in Richmond will be appreciated nowhere better than in New England. The negroes of the new generation, who were born to freedom, take hold of life with a great deal of rational energy. They see their chances of securing independence for themselves and their children, of becoming strong factors in the working life of the South, and they grasp the situation with the imagination and patience and hope in apparent defeats which are not the least valuable of their qualities of mind.
